String-tastic!

I’m a Tool fan as many of you know and I’ve yet to find another band that can move me in the way that they can. So when I stumbled on The String Quartet tribute albums to Tool a week ago I was as happy as a kid in a candy store.  Using only string instruments they perform variations of popular songs by mainstream bands and the results can be interesting to hear.
“The Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ) is a rotating collective of Los Angeles[citation needed] musicians widely known for its series of tribute albums to rock and pop acts. Their albums are released through Vitamin Records and primarily performed by a string quartet; however, a wide array of instruments have appeared throughout the series.”
They manage to replicate the rhythm and tone of most of the songs with surprisingly good results and many of their performances are right on par with the original compositions. It gives you a new found appreciation of the original songs by highlighting their sometimes intricate compositions.  So far my personal favourite is their version of Tool’s Schism from the Lateralus album which I’ve linked to at the bottom of this post as a sample of their work.
They’ve also done the entire Ænima album with a great version of Stinkfist, H. and Forty Six & 2. The rest of Tool’s albums receive the String Quartet treatment on Anotomica: A String Quartet Tribute to Tool.
I’ve also had a listen to their versions of Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle and it’s just as great and after hearing good things about their Radiohead albums I’d definitely like to try to get hold of them as well. If you’re looking to hear a band you like in a whole different way then I can heartily recommend the String Quartet’s albums and it’s also the perfect music to put on in the background when you need to get some work done.  It might even be a good way to get friends interested in bands such as Tool, Radiohead and A Perfect Circle who would normally not give them a second listen. For more info and a list of all their albums head on over to Vitamin Records.

New Tool album in the works

Tool logoThose of you who know me will know that I’m a huge Tool fan of note.  Ever since I was given my first Tool album, Lateralus, as a 21st birthday present I’ve never looked back and its been an almost constant album on my iPod, in my car and on my music centre so it was with keen interest that I read on Toolshed that Danny and Maynard have confirmed that they are in the very early stages of planning their next album:

In recent interviews, both Adam and Maynard have mentioned that the band is in the early writing phase for the next Tool album. You veterans of the waiting game know this means we still have a while to wait, especially with everyone being busy with side projects.

Tool fans will be used to the long wait between albums so this means we probably only have another 4 years or so to wait before their next album hits stores.  One thing I know is that the album is definitely going to be worth the wait as I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of their albums, although admittedly I’m a huge fanboy so your results may vary. :)

PJ Harvey rocks!

Wow.  I’m amazed at the recent batch of PJ Harvey tracks I’ve gotten hold of this past week.  She is one of the most talented female musicians that I’ve had the great pleasure of listening to and is right up there with Tori Amos in my opinion.  I find their style of music far more listenable to the ear than more typical female pop acts that seem to be blighting the music scene these days (I’m starting to sound almost like some sort of mother grundy here!) and I’m glad top see that they are still managing to find an audience out there.  So if I can recommend a few albums for anyone interested:

  • Is This desire?
  • Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
  • To Bring You My Love
  • White Chalk

Pedal to the Metal-lica

So with the dawn of our second last day in Joburg we decided that a late morning was in order especially as this was Dawid and Tracy’s last day in Joburg before heading on the long drive back to Natal. Dawid was in for a special day as well seeing it was his birthday so we were in for a nice large breakfast before they had to hit the road. So after our morning ablutions were completed we all gathered in the dining area and wished Dawid a happy birthday before we tucked into yet another scrumptious Amakoekoe breakfast. After we were done Newlande and myself went back to our room and played some DS and chatted while Dawid, Tracy and Steven aka Denouncer started the ordeal of packing up all their possessions and checking out of the guest house. Once they were done we said our goodbyes and thanked them for a wonderful time before I grabbed them for some group photos.

With the rest of the Amakoekoe gang gone me and Newlande were left on our lonesome and decided that we should grab hold of Graeme and Jarrod to see if they’d be up for some mall crawling and lunch. So after a good few sms’s to organise everything we managed to finally guide them through to our lodgings before hopping into Graeme’s brand new Peugeot and heading off to Northgate mall. We browsed through a few games shops and walked and talked before deciding to head into Spur for a nice lunch. While we were dining I spied out of the corner of my eye that the staff of the restaurant were approaching with a birthday surprise. Now none of us here were having a birthday so it was a bit of a shock when they stopped at our table and began singing happy birthday to Newlande who was so astonished that she said a few choice four letter words in Afrikaans before blushing crazily when the rest of the patrons began congratulating her on her ‘non-birthday’ :D

With lunch done we headed back into Rage for the final time so that we could make good use of the smaller crowds and try to grab some hands on game time with the playable demos on show there. There wasn’t much new on show so I spent a pleasant 90 minutes just walking the show floor and checking out everything for one last time. So once we were done here we made our way back to the guest house and then proceeded to get hold of Deanen for our night’s main attraction, a Metallica tribute concert at Tempos. After some hassle in trying to describe to Deanen how to precisely get through to our guest house we managed to meet up with him and make the journey through to tempos.

After arriving at the gate and paying the entrance fee of R40 (Newlande got in for free because it was ladies night!) we made our one to one of several stages where bands perform every Sunday evening. There was a band by the name of Summit that performed some passable renditions of punk and alternative songs although I must say that their vocalist just couldn’t manage to pull off some of the songs. After sampling some tunes here we made our way through to the Metallica stage where we hooked up with some friends of Deanen’s and settled in for the evening’s proceedings. First up was a band by the name of Falling Aces that was quite good if nothing spectacular, but I was in for the surprise of my life when I saw that the one and only Barney Simon was the host for the evening! I’ve always been a huge fan of his so it was with a huge smile on my face that I got ready for the main performance of the evening. Without further ado we were presented with a South African band, White Rabbit, that performed some great covers of Metallica songs and really got the crowd pumped. So much so that Newlande went head first into the mosh pit with her pink Justice League t shirt! They really outdid themselves and gave a great performance of all Metallica’s big hits. Deanen’s brother was also fortunate enough to garner a free copy of the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic and a bottle of champagne for his moshing skills. :)

At the end of the concert we went through to Amakoekoe with Deanen and after he dropped us off we fell into our room exhausted from our day. We didn’t have the energy to get up to anything so we just lay in bed and chatted for an hour or so before closing our eyes and falling asleep in preparation for our big day, the trip back home.

Vicarious (official video)

Okay, a bit of a mess up with the previous posting. This is in fact the official Adam Jones created video. Watch it and be prepared to be amazed.

Vicarious

Wow. Wow. WOW!! That’s all I can say after watching this. Adam Jones has once again outdone himself with a spectacular video. Best of all, the DVD single is out in SA soon as well for the paltry sum of R96! As an added extra there are two live videos as well. something that Tool has never released officially before. This is a must get for me. Good thing my birthday is just round the corner ;)

Finding beauty in the dissonance

Though I was feeling a bit under the weather last night I did manage to rewatch the last two Tool DVD singles for Schism and Parabola. I never tire of watching Tool videos for the simple fact that Adam Jones has constructed some truly beautiful images that stand up to multiple viewings due to their uniqueness and hidden meanings. Tool videos are so far removed from the usual music video tripe that we are served up on a daily basis on MTV. They do not pander to the lowest common denominator and they serve as an additional layer to the music, not as merely eye candy. You are expected to think for yourself and decipher the meanings of the video on your own. So be prepared for a video that challenges your preconceptions of music and film and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Rival Factions

Thanks to my friend Karl I can finally give a listen to the latest Project 86 album, Rival Factions. Their previous albums have all been very hard with very thoughtful and amazing lyrics that have a real sense of power behind them and manage to convey a deep message while at the same time not being condescending. I was glad to see that All Music Guide gave the album a 4.5 out of 5 rating and described it as “an album the likes of which few have thought them capable.” Its going to be an interesting listen since it would appear that its a major departure from their earlier sounds and seems to have toned down their harder sound but at the same time it has lost none of the depth that first drew me to their music. Can’t wait to give it a listen. Thanks a million Karl!

(As repayment for Karl’s kindness I’ve let him have my Guitar hero for a while. So all’s well that ends well.)
