Phillip K. Dick on Blade Runner

Blade Runner Final Cut

Blade Runner Final Cut

As a huge Blade Runner fan you can imagine my joy when I found the following link posted to a letter written by Phillip K. Dick to the Ladd Company after he had seen a short clip of Blade Runner.  It’s interesting to read as it gives a unique insight into Dick’s views on the film’s impact of sci fi as a genre and it also shows that he’s views on the film would pan out in the long run.  So if you’re a fan of sci fi or Blade Runner then be sure to read the full letter here:

Long weekend woes

This past weekend was a long four day weekend for many of us including me after I put in some extra work on Tuesday to get Friday off and with a long weekend in front of me it was the perfect time to get in a lot of game time. The past two weeks have seen the first wave of the end of year gaming tsunami hit us with big releases such as ODST, Colin McRae DiRT 2 and the usual wave of EA Sports 10 releases all vying for my time. It doesn’t get any easier with the next two to three months bringing in even more great games so of course I was more than happy to get a few extra days of gaming time in while I could. So NHL 10, DiRT 2 and ODST Firefight saw me for most of the weekend with only the occasional glimpses of my new favourite show Ninja Warrior, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and the odd Seinfeld episode tempting me to leave the confines of my room. The weather was also perfect to stay in doors with cloudy skies and drizzly days greeting us for most of the weekend.

I also managed to get some reading done with Marvel’s first volume of the Ultimate X-Men being my reading material of choice. So far I’m still more a fan of DC Comics though as their characters just seem to resonate to a larger degree with me. That being said, I did end up buying Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 as well so I can’t be all that dismissive of Marvel’s comics just yet. So overall my long weekend boiled down to me vegging to a very large degree, more so than at any time since my student days. Then again its always great to be able to just unwind totally and forget about all your day-to-day problems isn’t it? :)

The Village Scientists

I’ll let the following video speak for itself:

Germans, wrestlers and revolutionaries.

Xbox 360 logoIts been a while since I last posted updates about my reviews for Xboxgaming.co.za so here’s the latest batch for your reading pleasure:

  • Wolfenstein – Raven Software’s sequel to id’s classic FPS game of Nazis and the occult forces they try harness to turn the tide of WW2.
  • UFC 2009 Undisputed – The first UFC title for several years brings a great mixture of MMA grapplers and good controls to one of this year’s most compelling fighting games.
  • Red Faction: Guerilla – Red faction sees you as a revolutionary on Mars trying to liberate the red planet from the oppressive grip of the EDF.  A unique physics engine that allows you to smash through anything and take down buildings with just a hammer is the highlight here and makes for some laugh out loud moments as buildings come crashing down around you when you least expect it.

So there you have it, feel free to read them and leave comments on the site with your own thoughts.  Don’t forget to visit my game reviews page to catch up on all the other reviews I’ve written! :)

Return of the Bean

If you tried to pop on over to Counting Beans the last few days you would have been greeted by one of many error pages and/or pictures of emptiness and surely you would have shed a tear at being unable to read my inane ramblings so let me give you a quick update.  As you can see on Craig’s blog (we share hosting space if you were wondering) there was a slight mixup after our hosting guys decided to move our sites to a new server all while neglecting to tell us of that little fact.  Of course they somehow managed to fluff it up and had to then get some code monkeys to look at our sites and fix everything up.  At the end of the day it was real shoddy service from their side but hopefully it was the exception that proves the rule and it shouldn’t become something regular and if you’re reading this then the site is definitely back up and running. :)

Pidgin hints & tips

PidginAs a long time user of Pidgin I’ve come to realise that there are quite a few tips and tricks to the program that may not be evident to users that are only loading the program up for the first time.  The issue with this is some users may miss functionality that they’ve become used to in their other programs and so feel that Pidgin has less to offer them.  Nothing could be further from the truth as Pidgin has a great community of plugins and options that can customise the program top suit your needs.

So without further ado, here’s my list of the most useful options and plugins that most users should enable right from the get go when loading up Pidgin for the first time.

  • First up is the Release Notification plugin which does exactly what it says, informing you of any new releases of Pidgin with a small box in the Buddy List window.  Probably one of the most important tips for Pidgin is to keep it continuously updated as the newer versions fix security flaws and add in significant fixes.  For instance Pidgin 2.6.1 added voice and video which most users were clamouring for.  So be sure to activate this plugin by going to Tools – Plugins and then selecting the checkbox next to Release Notification.
  • Next up is the Log Reader plugin which reads logs from any other IM clients you’ve used before on your PC (Adium, Triallian MSN, etc) and then incorporates them into the chat histories of your Pidgin contacts.  Its a rather nifty way on consolidating all your chat logs into one source.  The plug in once again activated via the Tools – Plugins menu.
  • The History plugin also works with your contacts’ chat histories to insert the last conversation you’ve had with them into new conversation windows.  This comes in useful for people such as myself that have a tendency to close chat windows quite frequently and with this plugin enabled you won’t forget what the last question was you may have asked someone if you’re juggling several conversations at once.Once again activate it from the Tools – Plugins menu.
  • Another conversation tip is to go to Tools – Preferences and select the Conversations tab.  On that screen you should deselect the “Close IMs immediately when the tab is closed” option.  That way you won’t lose your recent conversations immediately and you’ll also prevent the annoying “User has left the conversation” messages from appearing every time you or the person you are chatting to closes the window (although this only affects Jabber and Google Talk accounts).
  • Another feature many users are used to that does not come as standard with Pidgin is the ability to make use of notifications to see when you’ve received a new chat message or when your contacts come online.  Its an easy enough problem to solve by installing the Guifications addon.  You can grab it from the Guifications site and then merely run the installer after which you’ll want to enable the plugin in the Tools – Plugins menu.  This plugin also allows you to download themes for the toaster popups as well as specifying as to which events should make use of the notifications.
  • A personal favourite of mine is the Pidgin-Musictracker plugin which uses the current song you are playing as your status message in a similar manner as the official Google Talk and MSN clients do.  Before you can use it you’ll need to download it from the Pidgin-Musictracker site and then enable it from the Tools – Plugins menu.  you can configure how it should display your music status as well as which player it should look at and whether it should use the protocol’s native ability to display your Now Listening status.  Its definitely one of the best community plugins I’ve found for Pidgin.

That should cover most issues the average user will have when it comes to using Pidgin and hopefully you’ll be more aware of how open and useful Pidgin can be if you’re just prepared to set it up correctly for 5 minutes the first time you use it.  feel free to post a comment if you’re a bit unsure of the above steps or if you’ve got a question.  Happy chatting! :)

We Are ODST

If you’ve been following my gaming habits on Xbox Live you’ll have realised I’m one of the biggest Halo fans out there.  Most nights I can be found shooting away at nameless enemies from all around the world.  Not that I win many games though.  With the bad internet connections here in South Africa its more luck than skill that determines who wins games for us.  Nonetheless I’ve never had as much fun in any other game as I’ve had in Halo 3.  So imagine my joy and fanboi glee as I spotted this trailer for the next instalment in the Halo saga:

A brilliant trailer once again by the guys at Bungie and its definitely got me excited for the 22 September release.  Long live Halo! :)
