Plettenberg Bay

After a couple of hectic weeks at work I’ve finally got a chance to sit down and take stock and post my thoughts coherently here on my blog for once.

Its been a very busy 2-and-a-bit weeks but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Its been a tremendous challenge but one that I’ve embraced openly with both arms. Its certainly a step up from the usual processing grind that I had become used to. Now you might be thinking what precisely this all has to do with Plettenberg Bay. Well, let me enlighten you. Newlande has graciously offered me the opportunity to visit her and her family over the 2nd weekend in February at their house in Plett on the Goose Valley Golf Estate. Needless to say I jumped at the chance! I’ll be getting an awesome vacation in one of the most beautiful spots here in the lovely Western Cape and I’ll also get to meet the wonderful Miss Van Rooyen.

Newlande has sent me some pics from her previous visits there and I’ve been amazed at how wonderful the are looks. I can remember it only vaguely from a brief car drive I took nearly 10 years ago through the area. I’m looking forward to seeing its beauty up close and personal. its going to be quite an adventure as I’ve never had to drive so far by myself before and as you most probably can guess, I’m not the world’s most calm traveller. There is also the chance that Newlande won’t be able to make it in which case I of course won’t be going through, but I’ll think optimistically for now. Its certainly going to be a great relaxing weekend to help me unwind from my first month in my new position. Plett, here I come!! :D

Party time!

My latest game review for IOL Technology is up here:

Viva Pinata Party Animals review

Party Animals is a light weight mini-game compilation that is best suited for short bursts of gaming with several mates around the TV. It might not be the best game out there but its good for a fun filled evening.

Next up for me is SOCOM Tactical Assault for the PSP. I’m interested to see how this third person shooter franchise is going to translate into a tactical experience. It got a luke warm 7.5 from Gamespot but nonetheless my interest is piqued. I’ll post the link to said review once its live. Enjoy!

The first week . . .

So my first week in my new position has come and gone. My thoughts? Its a lot more work entailing a lot more organisation and planning on my part. I have to try and complete all my clients’ work while at the same time reviewing the junior clerks’ work and getting it out on time. The end of January will be especially hectic with the deadline for individual tax payers’ returns looming up. We’ve also had some problems getting certain programs to work that we use to import information from clients into Pastel.

I am quite enjoying the heady thrill of working to tight deadlines though. There’s a certain buzz or high you get from working your way through a pile of work. Each and every file I manage to get out gives me a sense of accomplishment. Its probably bets summed up by this excerpt from Scott Adam’s blog:

When I was done, my desk was breathtakingly clear of debris. Gazing at my uncharacteristically pristine work space, a peculiar joy came over me. As I walked from my office back to my home, I felt lighter. There was a bounce to my step. I’m reasonably sure my body was creating extra endorphins.

It made me wonder if other people get an actual physical pleasure from doing work, at least the kind where you accomplish something, no matter how unimportant. My guess is that people who work long hours get a sort of charge every time they complete a discrete task. People who don’t get that charge, on average, probably find jobs where they can work fewer hours.

I recall my corporate days, where I would spend eight hours refining a Powerpoint presentation that, in all likelihood, would have no impact on the business. I always felt a charge of pleasure when it was done. Each time I reviewed the beauty and majesty of my graphs and bullet points, I would get a new little surge.

I think the pleasure of completed work is what makes blogging so popular. You have to believe most bloggers have few if any actual readers. The writers are in it for other reasons. Blogging is like work, but without coworkers thwarting you at every turn. All you get is the pleasure of a completed task.

I suppose that that is why I’m particularly attracted to accounting, especially for smaller businesses. You’re presented with a wide array of info that you have to collate into a sensible and logical whole. The multitude of ways that you can play around with the figures to present it to your clients for specific reporting needs is almost endless. That’s probably why I’d look into management accounting and a CIMA qualification in a few years time.

Overall I’m enjoying this step up in my accounting career. Its a new and refreshing challenge. I get to meet and interact with clients on a more regular basis as well. Strangely enough I seem to have developed quite a knack for forging positive relationships with clients. I’ve come to realise that this is an essential cornerstone to working in the accounting industry. the closer your ties with your clients, the better the standard of the work you are able to deliver.

LAN-tastic

My weekend over, I think its a good time to sit back and reflect at how it progressed. Saturday was relatively relaxed with my short Friday. The majority of my evening consisted of gaming with Newlande in Halo which of course resulted in our decimation at the hands of the ruthless AI enemies. Saturday was going to be a bit hectic as Roger had cajoled me into attending my first 360 LAN with him and some mates in Plattekloof. So after a very short morning I packed up my console and games and headed off.

Eleven hours later I finally manage to crawl into bed in the small hours of the morning. We played Call of Duty 4 for almost the entire day and night with me coming a nice third and occasional second to Poorie and Roger who once again proved their absolute dominance in the game. Most of our games usually ended up in gales of laughter as Ratnuts killed teamates and enemies with his martyrdom perk. :D I’ve got to say it was brilliant of Poorie to put up with us and even more kind of his mother to provide us with some great tasting and much needed sustenance in the form of boerewors rolls. An added advantage of the LAN was the chance for me to meet up with bypr0duct, Poorie and Stunic with whom I’d chatted online and gamed against for a while. All in all it was a great success and I enjoyed it tremendously. I’m really looking forward to the next LAN.

The year ahead

So with the arrival of 2008 fresh in our minds I thought it best to get the obligatory new year’s resolution list out of the way. So here goes:

  • Bungie jump Bloukrans (survival optional)
  • Go sky diving (survival optional)
  • Go for a long weekend to Plett with Newlande and Graeme (survival imperative!)
  • Travel to Bloemfontein to see the Scottish shopping mall.
  • See Snotkop perform and attend various other Afrikaans music festivals
  • Attend RAGE
  • Attend gym (and out perform Roger in the weight lifting!)
  • Get a LCD TV.
  • Get a PS3. (See above)

So as you can see, its a relatively grab bag of excitement awaiting me for the forthcoming year! :D What the heck, as they say you only live once. Might as well go out with a bang, or in the case of the sky diving, a splat! Here’s hoping everyone has a great year ahead of them!

Serenity

ContentmentIts always good to know that a person has friends that look out for you. This was driven home to me today when saying goodbye to a good friend of mine.  I was telling her how tired I was when she remarked “Don’t let me worry about you”.  That really spoke volumes to me.  Too often I get in the position of neglecting the fact that those friends around me have a vested interest in how I’m feeling.  They worry and fret over me even though I might not be aware of it.  It made me glad to know that ehre was a truly good friend who was concerned over how I was doing.

I suppose that’s one of the reasons that we always check with each other how our days have been and what’s happened since we last spoke.  Its not merely a matter of finding out the latest news and gossip, its also a way of checking up  on each other.  I know that’s why I’m always asking my friends how they’re they doing.  I want to be sure they’re ok, both emotionally and physically.  Kitti, the friend I’m referring to here, always makes a point of knocking some common sense into my empty head and for that I’m very grateful.  I’m constantly forgetting the small and logical things and she makes a point of getting me to remember them and think straight.  She really must have the patience of a saint to deal with me and my foibles (lovable though they may be ;) ).  Heck, she’s even been kind enough to throw a few recipes my way for me to try out for work.  On a side note, her pizza is to die for!  Hot, spicy and amazingly delicious!! :)

So to you dear Kitti I say thanks.  I’m glad that you’re looking out for me in these small ways because you know how stupid your minion is when it comes to these sort of things.  I better up though so that the promotion I’m looking forward to can come up soon!  I can’t let Sasuke, Chibi and Ed hog all the glory now can I! :D

Why I never finish games.

I’ve gained a bit of a reputation amongst my friends for having the knack of never finishing the games I buy. No matter how short or easy the game is I’ll never get around to finishing it off. I thought it about time that I set the record straight once and for all. The reason I never finish any games is:

NEWLANDE VAN ROOYEN

Yes, Newlande has made it her life’s mission to ensure that I never ever finish any games I buy from this day forward. Take tonight for instance. I log onto Live in the happy knowledge that I’m going to finally get some time in with Gears of War only to be rudely accosted by her. She then smacks me round the noggin a couple of times and screams at me that I MUST play Halo 3 with her or face the consequences. Being the nice guy I am I of course say yes and proceed to play several games of Halo with her during the course of the night. Once I’ve finally managed to extricate myself from Halo she then keeps me absorbed in a conversation detailing her breakfasting habits and how much she likes it when men make her tea (don’t ask me either).

The funny thing is, she still somehow manages to complete all her games with 1000 gamerscore tallies. this of course means she ridicules me relentlessly afterwards about how much I “suck” at said games. I suppose though this is what they mean with the phrase tough love. I’ve been show a way to salvation though by a mutual friend of ours. He has the cunning strategy of using “housework” as an excuse to avoid Newlande’s clutches and if that fails he frantically resorts to pulling the network cable from his 360 in hopes she will not distract him from his gaming pleasure.

I should really follow his example and actually progress with my games, but unfortunately I cannot. For you see, I really do enjoy my conversations with funny Wacky Angle. Somehow I have fun been killed and tbagged by gamers the world over. Its a strange compulsion to want to game this way every night, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. So a big thank you to Newlande. Don’t worry Wacky, this is merely a joke post. Missed ya the past week or so!!!!!! :D
