Losing track of time.

Finally I managed to get my hands on Final Fantasy 12 here in South Africa! The wait has been VERY long but at the end of it just turning on my old PS2 and watching the long intro made it all worth it. The beauty of Final Fantasy (FF) is that it manages to wrap you up in a whole different world and make you become emotionally attached to the characters while at the same time putting a uniquely Japanese twist to the western idea of swords and fantasy.

I played for about 6 hours on my first go with it and managed to make some progress through several of the initial dungeon crawls the game throws you into very early. The whole gambit system will take some getting used to and might require me to spend some time fine tuning my characters actions till I’m satisfied but it would seem like a great idea on Square’s part to move away from the random turn based battles of the previous FF games. I enjoyed FF X immensely and the turn based system they used there worked a treat but it pales into comparison with the strategy and action used in the ‘real time’ fights in 12.

The story of 12 has also moved away from the more character driven plots like in 8 and 10 with your characters being a small part of a much larger picture. Unlike DQ8 the story is much more important with a very politically centred story focussing on nations with fewer character driven scenes. That’s not to say that your characters are ignore but the story no longer focuses exclusively on them.

Next up for me:
